United States Post Office opens 24/7 Automated Postal Center

Demonstrating that automated retail leader AVT is in the right place at the right time, the US Postal Service is now offering a 24 hour Automated Postal Center (APC) at the Casper, Wyoming's main Post Office, located at 411 N. Forest Drive.

The self-service retail machine is the postal equivalent of an ATM machine. The Automated Postal Center (APC) provides a variety of postal self-service, from buying stamps to mailing by certified mail, Express mail, purchasing insurance and mailing from small packages up to 70 pounds. The machine accepts credit or debit cards and is English and Spanish capable. The Casper Post Office will be promoting the new APC with an open house from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday., March 31st.

At the same time, the USPS plans to shut down the Carol Stream, Illinois Office and cut 7,500 Jobs.

Regarding the district office closings, an article from Chicago Breaking Business reports that the USPS chose to focus on shutting down offices that are either in rural locations or offices that are not entirely necessary. Even if these locations close, it is argued that residents in each of the respective regions are able to access other offices nearby, which eases the blow a little bit. Furthermore, the same article highlights that cutting 7,500 employees will save the USPS a lot of money, even if it sounds incredibly drastic.

Flix on Stix Displays New Movie Distribution System at Airport Revenue News Conference

'Game-Changing' Technology Allows Consumers to Download Movies to a Portable USB Flash Drive

CORONA, Calif., March 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Flix on Stix (flixonstix.com) displayed their new kiosk that downloads movies to a portable flash drive at the recent Airport Revenue News Conference, titled "Game Changers," which featured products that represent the future of airport retailing.

The Flix on Stix system offers an almost limitless array of movie titles that can be viewed on any computer or through a set-top box to a television. The customer can choose how long they wish to keep each title, and there are never any late fees or DVDs to return.

For airport passengers, the system is ingenious because it is untethered and totally portable – so they don't need an internet connection and can watch their movie in-flight or in their hotel on their personal computer.

The Conference also highlighted the change in how products are sold at airports throughout the world, as they switch from manned retail establishments to self-serve automated systems.

AVT, Inc. (OTCQB: AVTCD), Flix on Stix's manufacturing partner, was also at the show, showing several new Automated Retailing systems that now offer products as diverse as iPods, bathing suits, sunglasses, cell phones, cosmetics, and even prescription drugs in a self-serve environment. These innovative machines engage customers, and dramatically reduce overhead costs.

AVT founder, Shannon Illingworth, commented on the growth potential of this industry. "We have received tremendous interest in our new Airport Automated Retailing Systems. It's the smart solution for the owner, the retailer, the airport and the customer."

Robert Bienias, Managing Partner of Flix on Stix agrees. "This is a new era in media distribution and retailing, as consumers can now have convenience, choices, and content."

Self service profitability helped by technology based reports

Self service profitability helped by technology based reports Interactive online reports preferred over paper.

AVT has revolutionized the way the vending operator can do business. AVT reports capture lots of data from the vending machine, automatically. Then AVT’s vending management systems can download the data and sift through it, presenting it in ways vending operators can readily understand and use to increase profitability.

An individual operator's level of technology and operational focus greatly determine which type of report from the vending management system is most advantageous. However, the reports mentioned most often focus on three topics: cash reconciliation, product merchandising and route efficiency.
"There are different levels of evolution," said John Davies, owner of Vendsys and Synectic Software Solutions. In his experience, operators using less sophisticated systems, such as reading cash meters manually and using spreadsheets, want to formalize their cash accountability and better manage product per machine with plan o grams and prekitting. "There's a lot of interest in prekitting," said Davies. "It ensures more efficient route operations and greater control over route operations."

Cash accountability can include the cash variance report, which shows what the operator collected against what the system reports was sold. "The report shows the vending cash meter, but also assures the product is going through the machine, so it's also an inventory report," said Davies. Other critical reports are inventory reconciliation (how products travel from the warehouse thru to the machine) and a waste report, which includes rates of product spoilage and if the product is making it back to the warehouse for disposal. "There needs to be cash accountability, but also an accountability as far as products," he added.

One key report AVT customers rely on is the location profitability report. It tallies the sales value of the location with the recorded waste, commission and visitation cost (which includes the labor component of servicing that location). The report supplies an overall profitability or contribution number. "It's a drill down format report," said Davies. "The operator can look at the individual route and see its contribution, then drill down to the account level, then down to the machine level and then down to each individual product."

Self-serve wine kiosks back up and running

Self-serve wine kiosks are back in some grocery stores in Pennsylvania after being shut down in December. The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board said this time, the kinks have been ironed out.

Right now there are 32 of the self-serve machines in stores across the state of Pennsylvania. If all goes well, 100 will be up and running in a year or so.

You can't help but notice the huge machine just inside the main entrance at Giant Foods on Linglestown Road in Susquehanna Township. There are bottles of wine inside, but some people have trouble extracting them.
"I think it's a great idea, but my problem is I'd want to know how to work it first," said shopper Barbara Tulli of Harrisburg as she looked at the wine kiosk.

Enough people were having trouble with the self-serve kiosks that the Pennyslvania Liquor Control Board (PCLB) shut them down just before Christmas. The Philadelphia company that owns the kiosks made some changes and put them back in operation after about a month.

"They tested them before bringing them back and we tested them before we brought them back," said Stacy Kriedeman, Deputy Director of External Affairs for the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board. "So we are cautiously optimistic that all of the issues have been worked out."

Just to be sure, an attendant from the PLCB has been staffing the machines since they returned to service - but the attendants will soon be phased out.
